Also known as the Bichon Havanais and the Havana Silk Dog, today's Havanese descended from the dogs that found a permanent home in Cuba, where they were popular among the wealthy Cubans. The Havanese were named after the Cuban capital of Havana. In the 1950s, the political turmoil of the Cuban Revolution almost drove the breed to extinction. Thankfully, three exiled families living in Florida and Costa Rica diligently worked to preserve the breed. By the mid 1960s, a breeding program was established in the United States. For this reason, many people feel that the breeds modern development is due to American breeder involvement. The Havanese breed has been referred to as the Bichon of Cuba. All published theories of their origin and development seem based on speculation, but it is certain that they were always a small breed which was exclusively owned by the higher social classes. Today the Havanese is a happy, outgoing, sturdy, short-legged small dog. Combining an outgoing temperament with their trainability, Havanese are excellent candidates for obedience training. |
